Align your home with the wisdom of Vastu

The most sacred corner of the house. Andhra Vastu treats a clean, open and low Eeshanya as the root of health, progeny and prosperity.

• Keep the North-East lowest in floor level and lightest in construction.
• Place the Pooja Mandir here, with the devotee facing East or North while praying.
• Locate the borewell, well or underground sump in the North-East.
• Keep large windows and open space here so the morning sun enters freely.
• An extended (Eeshanya perugudu) North-East corner of the plot is considered highly auspicious.

The seat of the fire element. A kitchen in Agneya supports good health, digestion and harmony among the women of the household.

• Build the kitchen in the South-East; North-West is the accepted alternative.
• Cook facing East — the stove sits on the East side of the platform.
• Keep the sink and water purifier in the North-East part of the kitchen, away from the stove.
• Place the refrigerator in the South-West or West part of the kitchen.
• Electrical meters, inverters and generators belong in the South-East.

The zone of stability and authority. The head of the family sleeping in Nairuthi keeps control of the household and its finances.

• Place the master bedroom in the South-West for the head of the family.
• Keep the South-West highest in floor level and heaviest in construction.
• Sleep with the head towards South (or East); the bed placed in the SW part of the room.
• Keep the locker or almirah in the South-West, opening towards North.
• Place the overhead water tank above the South-West.

The mouth of the house through which energy enters. Andhra Vastu places the main door in the Uchcha (exalted) half of the facing wall.

• East facing: place the door in the North-East half of the East wall (Uchcha), clear of the exact corner.
• North facing: place the door in the North-East half of the North wall.
• West facing: place the door in the North-West half of the West wall.
• South facing: place the door in the South-East half of the South wall.
• Make the main door the largest door in the house, opening inwards and clockwise, with a raised threshold (Gadapa).

The navel of the Vastu Purusha. Traditional Andhra homes keep a courtyard (Chowka / Manduva) here; modern homes keep it open and uncluttered.

• Keep the centre of the house open, light and clean.
• Use this space for family gatherings or a skylight.
• A Tulasi Kota or light rangoli in the centre courtyard is traditional.

Kubera's direction governs wealth and opportunity. Openness in the North invites steady income.

• Keep the North lower and more open than the South.
• Place the cash locker so that it opens towards North.
• Living rooms, home offices and verandahs suit the North.
• Leave more open space (setback) on the North than on the South.

The direction of the rising Sun brings health, fame and progeny. Andhra homes prize an open East with a verandah (Arugu).

• Keep the East open with large windows and a verandah.
• Living rooms, study rooms and bathing areas suit the East.
• Students should study facing East.

The zone of movement. It suits guests, daughters of marriageable age, vehicles and the alternate kitchen.

• Guest rooms and rooms for unmarried daughters suit the North-West.
• Septic tanks and toilets are acceptable in the NW (away from the exact corner).
• Park vehicles and store grains in the North-West.
• The NW is the accepted alternative location for a kitchen.

Andhra Vastu begins with the plot: its shape, slope, surrounding roads and Veedhi Pottu (street focus).

• Choose square or rectangular plots; a North-East extension is welcome.
• Slope should fall from South-West (highest) towards North-East (lowest).
• Streets on East and North are favoured. Street focus (Veedhi Pottu) from the East-North-East or North-North-East is Uchcha and auspicious.
• Build the compound wall taller and thicker on the South and West.
• Leave more open space on the East and North sides.
